NYC Restaurant History – Lombardi’s Pizzeria

Lombardi’s Pizzeria is not only a cornerstone of New York style pizza, it is also known as the 1st official Pizzeria of the United States. Established in 1905, Lombardi’s Pizzeria grew from the very humble beginnings that emanated from a Spring Street grocery store. The beginnings of this pizza pie were being sold directly to the working class of New York City for which the pizza was a tomato pie wrapped in paper and tied with a string. The pizzeria though endured some growing pains and was forced to shutdown, only to re-open 10 years later. Not only did they re-open, but they also relocated to the corner of Mott Street in Little Italy NYC. They have been in business ever since and celebrated their 100th anniversary in 2005 by pricing pizza pies at 5 cents a piece (The same price as it was in 1905).
